To upgrade to the recent release do I upload the 'core' folder into the SLD folder or just have it next to the SLD folder

no no, upload everything as it is in the zip file into the main folder of the application. The "sld" folder will no longer be required. So you will have "core", "plugins", 'templates" and "languages" folders
